MDMP Flashcards
Define MDMP and what does it do?
MDMP is an iterative planning methodology that helps the commander and staff to
1) Understand the situation and mission
2) Develop a COA
3) Produce an operation plan or order
What does MDMP facilitate?
collaborative planning
drives preparation
Steps of MDMP
1) Receipt of Mission
2) Mission Analysis
3) COA Dev
4) COA Analysis
5) COA Comparison
6) COA Approval
7) Orders Production
What is mission command?
The Army’s approach to command and control that empowers subordinate decision making and decentralized execution appropriate to the situation.
Step 1 of MDMP: Receipt of Mission input:
Higher HQ plan/order or anticipated new mission from commander
What are the tasks of step 1 of MDMP?
Alert the staff and other key participants Gather the tools Update running estimates Conduct initial assessments Issue the Commander's initial guidance Issue the WARNO
What are the outputs of MDMP step 1?
CDR’s initial planning guidance
Initial allocation of time
What are you gathering in the task “gather the tools”
Doctrine Higher’s HQ Products (OPORD, Maps, sand tables, overlays, area studies) SOPs Running Estimates Design Products
Define running estimate
A Running Estimate is the continuous assessment of the current situation used to determine if the current operation is proceeding according to the commander’s intent and if planning future operations are supportable.
What are the parts of the running estimate
Critical facts and assumptions Tasks Constraints Friendly force status Enemy activities and capabilities Civil Considerations Conclusions and recommendations
What are the parts of of conducting initial assessment?
Time and Resources available
Experience of the staff
Assist develop planning timeline (MA brief, CCB, DB), time location of briefs.
Products and suspense times
What is in the Commander’s initial guidance?
i. Time allocation
ii. Conduct ADM or start MDMP
iii. How to abbreviate MDMP if needed
iv. Necessary coordination / liaison needed
v. Movement and ISR to initiate
vi. Collaborative planning times and locations
vii. Initial info required (like CCIR and EEFIs)
viii. Any additional tasks for the staff
What information is in the WARNO?
i. The type of operation
ii. The general location of the operation
iii. The initial timeline
iv. Any movements such as comm nodes or recon to initiate
What is step 2 of MDMP?
Mission Analysis (MA)
What is the purpose of MA?
- Gain situational understanding (SU)
- Understand the problem
- Understand the OE
- Identify what must be accomplished
- Identify the purpose of the operation
What are the key inputs of MA?
HOACH Higher’s order Others’ products Army Design products CDR’s initial guidance Higher’s intel products / knowledge products
How many task are there in Step 2 of MDMP: MA?
18
1) Analyze the higher HQ plan or order
2) Perform initial IPB
3) Determine specified, implied, and essential tasks
4) Review available assets and ID resource shortfalls
5) Determine constraints
6) ID critical factors and develop assumptions
7) Begin risk management
8) Develop initial CCIRs and EEFIs
9) Develop the initial information collection plan
10) Update plan for the use of available time
11) Develop initial themes and messages
12) Develop a proposed problem statement
13) Develop a proposed mission statement
14) Present the mission analysis brief
15) Develop and issue initial commander’s intent
16) Develop and issue initial planning guidance
17) Develop COA evaluation criteria
18) Issue a warning order
What are the key outputs of MA?
PUMICE AP
Problem Statement Updated IPB / Estimates Mission Statement Initial CDR’s intent CCIR & EEFI Evaluation Criteria (for COAs)
Planning Guidance
Assumptions
Task 1: Analyze the higher HQ plan or order
Must understand:
i. How we (our team) contributes to the mission
ii. CDR’s Intent (Higher, 2 and 1 up)
iii. Concept of their (Higher) operation
iv. Available Assets
v. Available Time (timeline)
vi. Adjacent Units (Contributions and relationships)
vii. Identify issues and contradictions
What is task 2 of MA?
Initial IPB
What is step 3 of MA?
Determine specified, implied, and essential tasks
Define specified task
Task that is EXPLICITLY assigned to your unit by higher HQ (Verbal and Non-Verbal)
Usually in CONOP, tasks to subordinate units and annexes
Usually/Should be mission oriented rather than administrative
Define Implied task
Not EXPLICITLY assigned by Higher HQ in the order or verbally but MUST be accomplished to satisfy the overall mission.
Define essential task
Task(s) that MUST be executed to accomplish the mission.
o Always included in the Mission Statement
o Derived from specified or implied tasks
o Must always be a ‘doctrinal’ task
Action (by FF) to Effect (on EF)
