- Whales were seen as a valuable commercial resource to use for survival in a new and Unknown environment
- They were considered dangerous and a threat to early settlers - killing could be justified
Impact:
- Whale numbers declined; whaling became unsustainable, the activity ceased by 1847
- Cutting of timber for firewood to burn down blubber and clearing of vegetation for huts

- Forests could be harvested for fuel to burn whale and seal blubber
- many people worked on the goldfields in the mid 1850s so demand for timber was high
- Surrounding farmers required posts and railings for fences
Impacts:
- A small township with a pop of 61 people was established at sealers cove
- Soil disturbance
- Clearing of vegetarians
- Loss of old growth tress and habitat for wildlife
