Measurements and Standardization Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are Fundamental physical quantities?
They are units that are not derived from other units
Give examples of fundamental physical quantities?
The seven fundamental quantities are: Mass m kilogram Length l Meter Time t seconds Electric current I Ampere A Temperature T Kelvin Amount of substance M mole Lumrouse Intensity - candela cd
What are derived physical quantities?
Derived physical quantities(as it indicates in the name) are quantities that are derived from fundamental physical quantities. They are essentially created when you combine two or more physical quantities. There are an ample amount of derived physical quantities eg acceleration m/s2, density/kg/m3.
What is a scalar quantity?
Scalar quantities are quantities that only process magnitude but not direction. eg time mass , volume(m/s), temperature(0C).
What is a vector quantity?
Vector quantities are quantities that process both magnitude and direction e.g displacement(s), velocity(v),
acceleration(m/s2)
What is the difference between a scalar and vector quantity?
the difference between scalar and vector quantities is that vector quantities process both magnitude+ direction whilst scalar has only magnitude( size).
What is the meaning of standardization?
standard units are conventional units that are used to measure physical quantities scientifically. They are known as standard international units or SI units.
