MEASURES OF KLEPTOMANIA/ GAMBLING Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is one clinician-administerd scale that can screen for Kleptomania?
Kleptomania Symptom Assessment Scale (KSAS)
What is the Kleptomania Symptom Assessment Scale (KSAS)?
A clinician-administered scale used to assess the severity of kleptomanic symptoms over the past week (related to thoughts, emotions, behaviours). Each item is scored based on frequency/ severity from 0-4.
How much items in the KSAS?
11 items- KSAS
How are items rated on the KSAS?
- Each item is scored based on frequency/ severity from 0-4 (urges to steal: Frequency, intensity, control).
- Total score (0-44)
Name 1 strength and 1 weakness of the KSAS?
- Strength= Produces quantitative data as it uses numerical rating scales to measure/quantify symptom severity. Easy to analyse= track symptoms/treatment progress, changes over time, comparisons (are they improving with this treatment)=?)
- Weaknesses= self-report bias/ socially desirability bias. The disorder carries stigma thus patients may downplay symptom severity/ maligeering- to get out of criminal prosecution.
How can pathological gambling be screened for?
- Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale- Modified for Pathologic Gambling. (PG-YBOCS)
What is the PG-YBOCS?
An 10 item clinician-administered assessment tool designed to measure the severity of pathological gambling symptoms over the past week. It is adapted from the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (YBOCS) but modified for pathological gambling.
How is the PG-YBOCS scored?
- 10 items/ questions
- Each item related to urges/ thoughts/ complulsive gambing are rated on a 0-4 scale
- Total score= 0-40
How is the PG-YBOCS adminsitered?
Structured interview (10-20 mins)
strengths/ weakness of the PG-YBOCS
- Strength: Effective for monitoring symptom changes over time (before and after treatment)
- Weakness: Self-report bias as it relies on self-reported data (subjective), patient awareness, and honesty. Patients may downplay symptom severity to the stigma the disorder carries
