Measuring Hazards Flashcards

1
Q

What is VEI

A

Volcanic explosive index and it measures how explosive the eruption is (scale 0-8). This takes in to account plume height, volume, eruption type etc.
Doesn’t look at the impact of the eruption

Q

What is seismograph

A

Pen on paper and measures the shakes. The graph produced will show the intensity (high peaks=high intensity). Also measures fore and after shocks

Q

What was developed due to the inaccuracy of the Richter scale

A

Q

What is the Saffir-Simpson scale

A

Measures the magnitude of tropical storm events, takes in to consideration wind speed and potential damage. Doesn’t include rainfall
