Q

How are electrostatic forces of attraction made

A

The electrons in the outer shell of a metal are delocalised and share string electrostatic forces of attraction with the positive metal ions
These forces of attraction hold atoms together in a regular structure and Is known asmetallic bonding

Q

Why are most metals solid at room temperature

A

Electric forces between the metal atoms and sea of delocalised electrons are very strong so need lots of energy to be broken
Most compounds with metallic bonding have a very high melting and boiling points so are generally solid at room temperature

Q

Why are metals good conductors of electricity and heat

A

The delocalised electrons carry electric charge and thermal energy through the metal so metals are good conductors of electricity and heat

Q

Why are most metals malleable

A

The layers of atoms in a metal can slide over each other making metals malleable
this means that they can be bent or hammered or rolled into flat sheets

Q

Why do we use alloys

A

Because they are harder than pure metals

Q

Why are alloys harder than pure metals

A

Different elements have different sized atoms
so when another element is mixed with a pure metal the new metal atoms will distort the layers of the metal atoms making it more difficult for them to slide over each other
