What is the most common heating system for a building?
Boiler (gas or oil full)
What is LTHW?
Low Temperature Hot Water
How do boilers produce heat throughout buildings?
Boilers produce LTHW which is circulated throughout the building serving either radiators or fan coil units to produce heat.
How do you differentiate between gas and oil fired boilers?
Gas = yellow
Oil = red
(If oil fired this is very likely to come with an oil tank)
What is the main plant included in a heating system?
- Wall mounted atmospheric boilers (typical)
- Floor mounted forced draft boilers
- Modular boilers
- LTHW pump
- Pressurisation unit
- Expansion vessel
What are the typical terminal units included in heating?
- Radiator
- Trench heating
- Gas fired warehouse heater
- Electric panel radiator
- Gas fired radiant heater
- Air curtains (above entrance doors)
What are the two types of cooling systems?
- Water cooled chiller systems (medium and large buildings)
- Air cooled chiller systems (small and medium buildings)
What are typical cooling systems?
- Air cooled chiller
- Water cooled chiller
- Cooling tower
- Chilled beams (chilled water flowing through to cool office)
- Dry cooler
- Denco unit (typical for comms rooms)
What are two refrigerent based air conditioning systems?
- VRF units (simultaneously provides heating and cooling two different areas)
- Multi-split or split DX units (only provide heating and cooling at one time)
What is the difference between DX units and air conditioning units?
- DX units = direct expansion - refrigerant based
- Air conditioning unit = cool water
What is the most common ventilation system and how does it work?
- Air handling units
- Supply and extract air from office spaces
- Run ductwork through the ceiling/risers and terminate into the back of FCUs to provide ventilated air to the office.
- Can contain electric heaters or LTHW coils to pre-heat the air; or
- Can contain chilled water to pre-cool the air.
What is an FCU? and what does it do?
- Fan Coil Unit (most important part of the ventilation system)
- Responsible for distributing air to the office space
What are the two common types of FCU?
2-pipe fan coil unit: provides either heating only or cooling only.
4-pipe fan coil unit: has heating and cooling pipework supplied to it which allows it to provide heating and cooling
What are other types of ventilation systems?
- Toilet extract fan
- Heat recovery unit
- Through wall extract fan
