Media Outlets Flashcards
(14 cards)
3 main media platforms (especially in the past)
- Emedia (internet stuff)
- Print media
- Broadcast media
As Emedia has expanded, the distinction has blurred – Television sets didn’t used to connect to the internet.
What are different platforms allowed to do politically speaking? (4)
Broadcast media must be politically impartial
Print and Emedia can be politically biased
The BBC has its own code as our national broadcaster
What CAN’T newspapers and journalists do? (6)
Publish things that might be libelous or defamatory and are not based on the truth.
Intrude on people’s privacy – for example photographing someone on private property with a long lens camera.
Listen in on people’s phone conversations or hack into their emails.
Enter hospitals to report on stories without permission.
Harass people.
Name and use images of under 16s without permission.
When can newspapers break these rules/regulations?
When something is in the ‘public interest’.
This is when the public genuinely need to know the information because the story involves a public figure or a criminal who poses a threat. (and so they could, for example, hack into emails to find proof)
What does ASA do?
Any advert, whether it be printed in a newspaper or a sponsored post on Instagram, is regulated by the ASA.
Who is supposed to regulate newspapers and how is that going for them? (3)
Newspapers used to regulate themselves and now IPSO (independent press standards commission) does it but it doesn’t really work.
What does IPSO stand for?
independent press standards organisation
What would an issue for regulating emedia be?
On the internet different sites have different policies and different countries have different rules so it is difficult to regulate
What would be some key differences between platforms that could change various things about how a story could be produced/recieved?
- Text receiver
- Interactivity
- The power dynamic
- The rules and regulations
Platform differences: Text reciever
Will be different if the story appears in a printed publication vs online one (eg. perhaps older, perhaps more disposable income if you have to pay, etc.)
Platform differences: Interactivity
Will increase hugely if the story is featured on an online newspaper and/or shared on social media
Platform differences: power dynamic
Varies. Eg. how easily can receiver comment on something, spread issues (more if online). Also, online things are easier to delete.
- Emedia (internet stuff) (4.5)
a. May contain some things that would not be printed.
b. Online stories have the options for interactivity as people can like, comment, etc.
c. When it’s online the power dynamic between producer/receiver changes.
i. On the internet people can spread things faster, cancel culture etc.
d. If it’s on the internet, often people can just edit them whereas newspapers are physically printed out.
- Print media (3)
a. Not everything will go here as there is only so much you can physically print.
b. Generally, those printed out tends to be perhaps targeted at older audiences.
c. Once it’s printed and sold, the producer cannot change it. However they can print a statement.
