Media Representations of ethnicity Flashcards
(9 cards)
Representations of Criminality
Black people portrayed as criminal ie Halls study on the ‘black mugger’ moral panic
Ethnicity as a Threat
Van Dijk found black people were often represented as a threat to the majority population, this is increasingly being applied to asylum seekers and to muslims (2024 riots)
Marginalisation of ethnic group issues
reporting is ethnocentric- focuses more on the accomplishments of white individuals than those who are an ethnic minority
Institutional Bias
media is institutionally racist, violent murders of BAME people are more heavily reported on than similar killings of white people, reporting of disasters seems to be much more excessive when it includes white victims.
Tokenism
a black character being included just to ensure there is one
Neo-Marxist view of Ethnicity & Media
Hall’s neo-Marxist perspective argues that media deliberately transmits negative representations of ethnic minorities, fostering audience complicity in forming crude stereotypes
Pluralist Views of Ethnicity & Media
Pluralists believe that the media is not controlled by any single group. They argue that power is widely dispersed and that the media simply reflects the diverse interests of different groups in society
Van Dijk
discusses criminality, threat, marginalisation, and tokenism
