Medical Emergencies Flashcards
(35 cards)
What drug and is given for anaphylaxis?
Adrenaline
What is the mechanism of action of adrenaline?
Stimulates alpha and beta adrenergic receptors causing vasoconstriction and bronchodilation
What is the route of administration for adrenaline?
IM injection Z-track technique
What is the dosage of adrenaline?
Adults 1:1000 0.5mg (half a ml of the 1ml solution)
Every 5 minutes if necessary
Children 0.15-0.5 dependent on weight
What drug is used for suspected MI?
Aspirin dispersible tablets
What is the mechanism of action for aspirin?
Inhibits platelet aggregation by irreversibly inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes
What is the route of aspirin?
Oral (chewed or dispersed in water)
What is the dosage of aspirin?
Adults 300mg
Contraindicated in children under 16
What is given for hypoglycaemia when oral glucose is not possible?
Glucagon
What is the route of administration for glucagon?
IM injection Z-track
What is the mechanism of action of glucagon?
Stimulates hepatic glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis which increases blood glucose levels
What is the dosage of glucagon?
Adults and children ≥25kg - 1mg
Children ≤25kg - 0.5mg
What drug is used to treat angina and suspected MI?
Glycerin trinitrate spray (GTN)
What is the mechanism of action of GTN spray?
Vasodilates coronary arteries and reduces myocardial oxygen demand
Reduces preload to the hearts
What is the route of administration of GTN spray?
Sublingual spray
What is the dosage of GTN spray?
Adults 1-2 sprays - 400-800mcg
Repeat after 5 minutes if necessary
What drug is used to treat hypoglycaemia in conscious patients?
Oral glucose - glucose gel, sugary drinks
What is the mechanism of action of glucose?
Provides immediate source of glucose for metabolism
What is the route of administration of glucose?
Oral
What is the dosage of glucose?
Adults and children - 10-20g
Repeat after 10-15 minutes if necessary
Give after pt comes conscious as glycogen stores will be depleted
When is oxygen given?
All medical emergencies
What dosage of oxygen should be given?
100% oxygen
15L/min
What drug is given for asthma?
Salbutamol inhaler
What is the mode of action of salbutamol?
B2-adrenergic agonist causing bronchodilation
