Medication Classes Flashcards
(11 cards)
What do alkalizing agents do?
Correct acid-base imbalances by raising the pH level in the body
They can work by either directly neutralizing acid in the blood or by increasing the excretion of acid in the urine.
What is the normal pH range for acidic conditions?
7.35 - 7.45
What are the two types of analgesics?
Opioid and non-opioid
Analgesics block or reduce the transmission of pain signals to the brain.
What is the primary function of anesthetics?
Provide pain relief and sedation
Anesthetics induce loss of sensation or consciousness for medical procedures.
What do anticholinergics block?
The action of acetylcholine at synapses in the CNS and PNS
This inhibits parasympathetic activity.
What is the main purpose of anticoagulants?
Prevent formation of blood clots or growth of existing clots
What conditions do anticoagulants help reduce the risk of?
Thromboembolic events such as Stroke, Heart Attack, and Pulmonary Embolism
What do anticonvulsants suppress?
Abnormal electrical activity in the CNS that leads to seizures
How do anticonvulsants exert their effects?
Through various mechanisms that target different aspects of neuronal excitability and transmission
What is the function of antidotes?
Counteract effects of poison, toxic substances, or overdose of a medication
The mechanism of action of antidotes varies depending on what?
The specific type of poisoning and antidote used
