Potassium Gluconate
Essential for conducting nerve impulses and regulating acid based balance
used to treat hypokalemia (due to excessive vomiting or laxative use)
Complications: GI upset, hyperkalemia
Do not use concurrently with spironolactone or lisinopril (increases hyperkalemia)
Ferrous Sulfate
Provides iron needed for RBC development and oxygen transportation
treat iron-deficiency anemia
Complication: GI upset, teeth staining, hypotension
DO not use with antacids, tetracyclines, dairy, caffeine
Finasteride
5-alpha reductase inhibitor
That decreases availible/useable testosterone by inhibiting enzymes
Which reduces prostate size and increase hair growth
Treats BPH/Alopecia in males
Females can not take
Do not take with Saw Palmetto
Complication: decrease libibo, gynecomastia, and ejaculation volume
Beta 2 Agonist
SABAs (albuterol, ephedrine, epinephrine, terbutaline, metaproterenol, levalbuterol)
LABAs (salmeterol)
Complications: tachycardia, angina, temors
Do not use beta-blockers
Muscarinic Agonist (bethanechol)
Stimulates muscarine receptor of GU tract, relaxes trigone/sphincter muscles to increase bladder pressure and urine execration
used for urinary retention and treats GERD
Complications: extreme muscle stimulation (signs of poisoning), can result in increase acid secretion, cramps, diarrhea, sweating, tearing, bradycardia, hypotension
Monoclonal Antibody (alirocumab)
Decreases LDL by binding to low density lipoprotein receptors.
Used to treat elevated cholesterol
Complication: hypersensitivity, local injection site reaction
Antiviral (Acyclovir)
Prevents replication of DNA and cell replication.
Treats HSV and Varicella-Zoster viruses
Complications: Phlebitis at infusion site, suppressed bone marrow, fever, headache, nephrotoxicity
Interates with Probenecid (gout medication)
Estrogen (estradiol)
blocks bone resorption and reduces LDL levels, needed for growth and maturation of female reproductive tract.
Used for contraceptives, acne, postmenopausal S/S, hypogonadism
Complication: Endometrial/Ovarian cancer, alters coagulation
Do not take warfarin
Refaxamin (antibiotic)
Used for travels diarrhea, IBS, and hepatic encephalopathy, reduces ammonia production
Complication: dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea
Increase risk of C-Diff
Interaction: Warfarin
Meds used for Gout Treatment
Allopurinol (need to increase fluids)
Colchicine (monitor for diarrhea)
