Because the Church supported only Galen’s ideas, the church was very powerful and would consider any other idea heresy.

- Human body is composed of four distinct fluids: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile.
- An imbalance of these humors was believed to be the cause of illness, and treatments aimed to restore balance.

- Too much blood gives a fever
- Too much phlegm gives a runny nose
- Too much yellow bile could cause vomitting
- Too much black bile could cause diarrhoea
