The only contact between the people and the Church. They celebrates and administrated the sacred rites, sacraments. People believed sacraments would help them towards salvation/everlasting life with God.

They also tried to preach (persuate) the teachings of the Church, they explained the Bible in latin.

They guided people on moral issues, helped the sick and needy.

Later Middle Ages, their role was to run schools.

Role of monks and nuns

Looked after the poor and sick, provided food for tavelers. Benedictory rules: work, pray, study, mission, agricultural improvement, medicine, education, science.
They kept learning alive by having someone copy books from Greek and Roman works.
