What were medieval houses like?
Wooden.
Several Stories.
High floors stuck out onto the street.
Workshops on ground floor.
Back gardens grew vegetables.
What was working life like?
Craftsmen were part of guilds.
Guilds were seperated by their trade.
Guilds set price of goods and wages.
Describe an apprentice
Stage 1, 12yo boy would live with a master craftsmen, slept in the workshop and had no wages. He was treated harshly.
Journeyman.
Stage 2, after 7 years he got paid and would travel to other workshops and towns for work.
Master Craftsman.
Stage 3, a journeyman would create a masterpiece and present it to the guild who judged its quality, if it’s good he became a master craftsmen. He could now open his own workshop.
What were the living conditions like?
Streets were dirty due to chamber pots being emptied.
Towns were cramped so disease would spread quickly.
Why was the life expectancy so low?
Filthy streets.
Cramped conditions.
Lack of advanced medicine.
Describe the Black Death.
Carried by fleas, carried by rats on ships.
Spread by the trade network throughout Europe.
Extremely Contagous.
What was medicine like in medival times?
4 Humors:
Phlem
Yellow Bile
Black Bile
Blood
Illness caused by imballance of 4 humors.
What treatments were used in medevial times?
Cupping (heated metal cups to draw fluids to surface)
Blood letting
Leeching
Amputation
Herbal Medicine
Why was religion important?
During times of pluage people turned to the church.
People feared going to hell.
A tithe was payed.
What are the 3 stages of becoming a craftsman in order?
Apprentice

What are the 3 stages of becoming a Knight in order?

Stage 1, 7yo boy would live with another lord, learn to ride a horse and swordfight. Learned manners and helped the lady.
Squire.
Stage 2, 14yo boy learned to fight on horseback, follow the lord into battle and care for his horse and weapons.
Knight
Stage 3, 21yo took the Ceremony of Dubbing and swore an Oath of Chivialry.
What defence features were in a castle?
Walls with battlments for soilders to patrol.
Turrets along the wall.
Drawbridge.
Portcullis. (metal grid/gate)
What was the purpous of a castle?
Allowed lords to run the land give to them by the king.
Defended against attacks.
4 features of a medieval town/city.
Stone walls.
Gates that closed at night.
Main street. (paved road/path)
Fair green. (annual fair)
