ANXIOLYTICS / BENZOS
- Ataxia
- Decreased cognitive function
- Sedation
- Cute toxicity
- Paradoxical response
- Have with meals
- Smoking decreased efficacy
- Avoid kava-kava and Valerian
- Extravasation can occur with Diazepam
DRUGS USED FOR NICOTINE/OPIOID ABSTINENCE
- Methadone (opioid)
- Bupropion (smoking)
- Nicotine replacement
- Verenicline ( reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms, monitor for depression/suicidal thoughts)
SIDE EFFECTS LITHIUM
- therapeutic range 0.8-1.4
- can cause hypothyroidism, kidney problems
- Check TSH, BUN, Creatinine
- Mantain sodium intake
- Blood work 12 hours after the last dose.
- NO diuretics and NO NSAIDs
SIDE EFFECTS VALPROIC ACID (syrup too)
- Gi distress
- Drowsiness
- Tremors
- Alopecia
- weight gain
- HEPATOTOXICITY can be fatal
- Monitor liver function tests ASL, ALT
- hyperammonemia, pancreatitis.
LITHIUM TOXICITY
- Blurry vision
- Ataxia
- Twitching
- Hypotension
- Polyuria
- Blurry vision
- Decreased LOC
SIDE EFFECTS VALPROIC ACID (syrup too)
- Gi distress
- Drowsiness
- Tremors
- Alopecia
- weight gain
- HEPATOTOXICITY can be fatal
- Monitor liver function tests ASL, ALT
- check PTT
- hyperammonemia, pancreatitis.
CARBAMAZEPINE
- Anticonvulsant, mood stabilizer, Bipolar
- Blood Dyscrasias ( anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia) decreased WBC and Platelets.
- Skin rash
LAMOTRIGINE
- Anticonvulsant
- mood stabilizer
- Rash (Steven’s Johnson) can cause organ failure, dizziness, headache, sedation.
BUPROPION
- Atypical
- For depression and to quit smoking
- Insomnia
- Headache
- GI distress
- agitation
- seizures
- HX of head trauma? NO BUPROPION it lowers the seizure threshold.
BUSPIRONE
- Anxiety, panic, OCD, PTSD
- Dizziness, nausea, headache
- NO sedation, NO dependency
- Takes 1-4 weeks for full effect
Flumazenil
- Antidote for benzos
CARBAMAZEPINE
- Anticonvulsant, mood stabilizer, Bipolar
- Blood Dyscrasias ( anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia) decreased WBC and Platelets.
- Skin rash
- Used for alcohol withdrawal as it decreases risk for seizures
METHYLPHENIDATE
- Adderall
- ADHD
- Insomnia, decreased appetite, weight loss
- Monitor the child’s weight and do not give at night
DISULFIRAM
- nausea, vomiting, sweating, palpitations, and hypotension
NALOXONE
- Antidote for opioid
BENZO ANTIDOTE
Flumazenil
ATOMOXETINE
- For ADHD but it, not a stimulant. SNRI
- Appetite suppression and growth suppression
HIGH VS. LOW POTENCY ANTIPSYCHOTICS
High potency high EPS but low sedation and dry
Low potency low EPS high dry and sedation
BUSPIRONE AND BRUXISM?
Low dose Buspirone can be used to treat the side effect of bruxism from SSRI
