Meiosis Flashcards
(20 cards)
where are homologous pairs found
the body cells
how are the two chromosomes of each pair are similar
size shape and genetic trait
what is a diploid number
the number of the chromosomes in each body cell
how many body cells do humans have
46
haploid number
the number of gametes or sex cells
how many haploid cells are there in humans
23
egg cell
cells formed by females during meiosis
sperm cell
a cell formed by males during miosis
fertilization
a union of egg and sperm to make a new organism
zygote
a female egg cell
what happens in mitosis
the resulting cells have
the exact number and kind of chromosomes as the original
parent cell
what If mitosis was the only way to reproduce cells,
then fertilized
eggs would have double the
amount of chromosomes.
miosis
is a special type of cell
division that produces cells with half the number of chromosomes
meiosis only occurs in what
gametes, bc
when they are produced, they have
half the number of chromosomes.
what is a zygote
is a fertilized egg which
will then have the correct number of chromosomes.
what happens during meiosis
Cells divide 2 times and up to 4 cells can be produced. If a human female has 46 chromosomes in a
somatic (body cell), then 23 would
be found in a human egg cell.
Spermatogenesis
is the male version of Meiosis and produces four new cells that are NOT identical to the parent cell or each
other.
Spermatogenesis produces what
2
sperm with an X chromosome and
2 sperm with a Y.
oogenesis
is the female version of
Meiosis it is unlikely that Oogenesis will produce more than one egg.
They will all have an X chromosome.
