meiosis Flashcards
(10 cards)
Meiosis
process of gamete formations in the reproductive organ
Phases of meiosis
- meiosis I: prophase I, metaphase I, anaphase I, telophase I
- meiosis II:…………………
Main events in meiosis I and meiosis II
- meiosis I: homologous chromosomes pair up and then separate
- meiosis II: centromeres divide, siter chromatids separate and become daughter chromosomes
Homologous chromosome
pair of chromosomes made up of two homologs
Crossing over
exchange of genetic material during sexual reproduction between two homologous chromosomes
A tetrad
four-part structure that consists of two homologous chromosomes, each composed of two identical chromatids.
Chiasma
point of contact between 3 chromatids belonging to homologous chromosomes
The differences between anaphase I and anaphase II
- anaphase I: homologous chromosomes undergo independent assortment into daughter cells
-anaphase II: centromeres divide and daughter chromosomes migrate
The differences between telophase I and telophase II
-telophase I: cytokinesis produces 3 daughter cells which are haploid
-telophase II: the nuclear membrane begins to form around the haploid sets of chromosomes
The differences between metaphase I and metaphase II
-metaphase I: homologous pairs line up at equator such that maternal or paternal member may be oriented toward either pole
-metaphase II: chromosomes line up at the equator
