meiosis Flashcards
understand the cell cycle, division and process of mitosis (7 cards)
how are sex cells different to the other cells in the body?
they only have half of the total amount of human genetic information.
(23 chromosomes)
what is meiosis?
meiosis is the cell division to produce new sex cells .
how many cycles are there in meiosis?
2 cycles, producing 4 daughter cells.
what is special about the daughter cells in mitosis?
they are genetically unique to each other and the parent cell.
how many chromosomes does a sex cell need?
23, so when they meet up to fertilise the new organism gets 46 chromosomes in total.
what happens in interphase?
the parent cell copies its DNA, converts single stranded chromosomes into double stranded.
prophase 1
DNA condenses into chromosomes, join together in homologous pairs.
