Membrane Transport Flashcards
(14 cards)
Define iso-osmolar
A solution having the same osmolarity as another solution
Define hypo-osmolar
A solution with lower osmolarity compared to another solution
Define hyper-osmolar
A solution with higher osmolarity
Isotonic
A solution that does not cause cells to shrink or swell
What is a hypotonic solution?
A solution that causes cells to swell due to water moving in.
What is a hypertonic solution?
A solution that causes cells to shrink due to water moving out
What are the main ions in extracellular fluid?
Na+
Cl-
HCO3-
What are the main ions in intracellular fluid?
K+
Mg2+
Function of channels
Allow passive movement of ions or water
Function of channels
Allow passive movement of ions or water
Function of channels
Allow passive movement of molecules (ions or water)
What are antiporters?
Membrane proteins that facilitate transport of 2 or more molecules across a membrane, but in opposite directions
Function of symporters
Move molecules in the same direction across a membrane
Facilitative vs Active transporters
Facilitative: without using energy
Active: against concentration gradient using energy (ATP)
