Membranes & transport - cell adhesion Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is necessary for an organism to be multicellular?
Cells need to adhere to one another to form tissues.
What is responsible for cell adhesion?
The plasma membrane.
What are the two types of cell adhesion?
Permanent or temporary.
What are cell adhesion molecules (CAMs)?
A type of cell surface protein required for cell adhesion.
How do CAMs function?
They bind cells with other cells or with the extracellular matrix.
What does the extracellular matrix contain?
Supporting structures, such as collagen proteins.
What is the function of the extracellular matrix?
Provides support for the cells.
What are examples of different cell-cell junctions?
- Tight junctions
- Adherens junctions
- Desmosomes
- Gap junctions
True or False: Cell adhesion molecules are found in different types of cell-cell junctions.
True.
