Memory Flashcards
input
information we receive from the environment
processing
operation performed on the sensory input
encoding
turning sensory information into a form usable by the brain
output
information we recall
storage
retaining information in our memory systems
retrieval
recalling stored information (memories)
visual encoding
storing visual input
acoustic encoding
storing sound input
eg: remembering the tune to a piece of music
semantic encoding
storing the meanings of input
what are the three forms of encoding within memory?
- semantic encoding
- visual encoding
- acoustic encoding
what are the three types of retrieval
- recall
- recognition
- re-learning
Features of short-term memory?
Features of long-term momory?
What are the three types of memory?
they make up long term memory
- Episodic memory
- Semantic memory
- Procedural memory
Episodic Memory
involves the ability to remember specific personal events, experiences and situations from the past
associated with the right pre-frontal cortex, conscious memory
eg: a fun holiday or a concert with friends
Semantic Memory
involves general knowledge and understanding. not tied to specific life events/experiences
associated with the left pre-frontal cortex, conscious memory
eg: facts about contries, meaning of words
Procedural Memory
the ability to learn and perform various motorl skills/actions. also known as muscle memory
subconscious recall (once encoded into long term memory)
eg: riding a bike, playing an instrument
