memory Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
study of coding in STM and LTM
A
- baddeley asked patients to memorize acoustically or semantically similar words. Immediate recal was worse with acoustically similar words, recall after 20 mins was worse with semantically.
limitation : words had no personal meaning to participants, results had limited application, causious abt generlaising.
2
Q
study into the capacity of STM
A
- jacobs read 4 digits and increased the no. digits till participant couldnt recall order.
- found participants could repeat back aorund 9 numbers and 7 letters correctly.
limitation : lacked control of extraneous variables. Some participants may have been distracted. Confoundig variables.
3
Q
study into the duration of STM
A
- peterson and peterson gave students a consonant syllable to remember and a 3 digit no. to count backwards. for a certian amount of time.
- average recall was lowest at 18 seconds, suggesting STM have a duration of 18 to 30 secs.
limitation : has no real life application, memorising consonant syllables, lacks extrernal validity.
4
Q
Study into the duraton of LTM
A
- bahrick yearbook study, asked to recall names of classmates showing participants their highschool yrbook or without.
- free recall was much less accurate.
srength : real life application, meaningful memories where studied, high external validity.
