Memory Flashcards
Storage
Retention of encoded info over time
Encoding
Processing of information into the memory system– for example, by extracting meaning
Retrieval
Process of getting information out of memory storage
Sensory memory
The immediate very brief recording of sensory information in the memory system
Short term memory
Activated memory that holds a few items briefly, such as the seven digits of a phone number while dialing, before the info Is stored or forgotten
Long term memory
Relatively permanent and limitless storehouse of the memory system, includes knowledge skills and experiences
Working memory
Newer understanding of short term memory that focuses on conscious, active processing of incoming auditory and visual spatial info and of info retrieved from long term memory
Parallel processing
Processing many aspects of a problem simultaneously. The brains natural mode of info processing for many functions. Contrasts with step by step processing of computers and conscious problem solving
Automatic processing
Unconscious encoding of incidental information such as space time frequency and of well learned info such as word meanings
Effortful processing
Encoding that requires attention and conscious effort
Rehearsal
Conscious repetition of info either to maintain it in consciousness or to encode it for storage
Spacing effect
Tendency for distributed study or practice to yield better long term retention than is achieved through massed study or oractice
Serial position effect
Tendency to recall best the last and first items on s list
Visual encoding
Encoding of picture images
Acoustic recording
Encoding of sound especially words
