Long Term Memory
Permanent, limitless amounts of information and stored for long period of time
Sensory Memory
Limited store, information from the senses and stored for a very brief period of time
Capacity
The amount of information that can be stored in memory
Duration
The length of time the information can be stored in memory
Encoding
The way that information is represented in the memory
Displacement
A type of forgetting
Where items in the STM are pushed out before reached LTM
Interference
A type of forgetting
Where information in the LTM is confused with similar information
Free Recall
Participants can recall items from a list in any order
Digit Span Technique
Measures the capacity of STM
Repeat strings of digits in order, increasing the number of digits until cant recall
Serial Recall
Testing STM
Recall items in an order
Proactive Interference
Things that are already learnt make it harder to learn new things
Pseudo - Words
Letters that sound like English words but they actually aren’t e.g. nym
Dual Task Method
