Memory: MSM, WMM and types of LTM Flashcards
(10 cards)
Name the slave systems of the WMM (working memory model)
Phonological loop and visuo-spatial sketchpad
Name the components of the slave systems of the WMM
Phonological loop- phonological store and articulatory control system
Visuo-spatial sketchpad- Inner scribe and Visual Cache
What do the components of the slave systems of the WMM do?
Phonological store- stores sounds for a few seconds e.g cat meow
Articulatory store- subvocal repetition for maintenance rehearsal
Inner scribe- spatial awareness of object distance
Visual Cache- visual inputs e.g colours
What does the central executive do?
Controls attention and directs information to the slave systems.
What the episodic buffer do?
General storage for other sensory inputs and sends info to the LTM
Who was the working memory model proposed by?
Baddeley and Hitch
Evidence for the WMM?
Baddeley and Hitch: Dual tasks studies
found performance was impaired when asked to do two tasks involving the same slave system, and performance improved when the tasks involved different slave systems
-Shows that there are multiple stores and that attention is limited
Evaluation of WMM?
-Central executive and episodic buffer are vague and are difficult to test empirically- suggests problems with internal validity
-Demonstrates separate STM stores where the MSM could not
-Does not discuss the LTM as having separate stores
-Of the cognitive approach
Name the types of LTM
Episodic
Semantic
Procedural
Evaluation of evidence of WMM?
-Baddeley and Hitch- lab study- lacks eco validity (tasks would not occur in real life) though it does hold construct validity
