A
Condition of the inner ear. Clinical syndrome characterised by episodes of:
- vertigo
- hearing loss
- tinnitus
Also associated with aural fullness

Epidemiology
A
20-60 years: Peak 50-60 years
Caucasian ethnicity
Family History
Migraines
Autoimmune diseases
Head Trauma
Viral infection

Symptoms
A
- Last between 20 minutes but typically last a few hours (<24 hours)
- Attacks occur in clusters over a few weeks although months or years of remission can also occur
= Tinnitus
= Fluctuating hearing loss
= Aural fullness
= Unsteadiness on feet
= Nystagmus
= Positive Romberg’s test

Clinical diagnosis over triad of:
- Vertigo
- Fluctuating
- Hearing loss

Differential diagnosis
A
- Vestibular Schwannoma (acoustic neuroma)
- Migraine with brainstem aura
- BPPV

A
Patient must alert DVLA once they are diagnosed, the DVLA will permit driving again if there is good control of symptoms
