Meninges Flashcards
(10 cards)
Three layers of meninges
Dura mater, arachnoid mater, pia mater
Layers of Dura Mater
1) Outer periosteal layer - firmly attached to skull, meningeal arteries, continuous with periosteum on outer surface of skull
2) Inner meningeal layer - close to arachnoid mater, continuous with spinal dura mater
Falx cerebri
Meningeal dura mater goes between two hemispheres; attached to crista galli and frontal crest
Tentorium cerebelli
Meningeal dura mater separates cerebellum from cerebrum; attached to occipital and temporal bones, but free anteriorly and medially
Falx cerebelli
Meningeal dura mater between two cerebellar hemispheres
Diaphragma sellae
Meningeal dura mater covering hypophysial fossa; infundibulum passes through opening in the center, connecting pituitary gland with brain
Arterial supply of dura mater
1) Anterior meningeal arteries (branches of ethmoidal)
2) *Middle meningeal artery (branch of maxillary) - enters through foramen spinosum
3) Accessory meningeal arteries (maxillary) - enters through foramen ovale
4) Posterior meningeal artery, et al (ascending pharyngeal artery - jugular foramen, hypoglossal canal; occiptital artery - jugular foramen, mastoid foramen; vertebral artery - foramen magnum)
*Biggest and most important
Innervation of dura mater
Small meningeal branches of trigeminal [V], vagus [X], C1-C3
Extradural space
Potential space between dura mater and bone
Can fill with blood –> BAD
Subarachnoid space
Contains CSF
