Health
A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and the absence of disease or infirmity
Social Health
The ability to form meaningful relationships and adapt to different social situations
Physical Health
The functioning of the body and the capacity to perform daily activities
Mental Health
The state of a person’s brain and the ability to think and process information
Spiritual Health
The ideas, beliefs, values and ethics of a person. It involves a guiding sense of meaning or value, and reflection of your place in the world
Emotional Health
The ability to express emotions and feelings positively
Why is health/wellbeing dynamic?
Constantly changes and could change slowly or quickly
Why is health/wellbeing subjective?
Health can mean different things to different people
Name characteristics of optimal physical health
Healthy body weight, appropriate levels of fitness, optimal blood pressure, absence of disease/injury/illness, optimal levels of energy
Name characteristics of social health
Supportive network of friends and family, effective communication with others, supportive and well functioning family, ability to adapt to social situations, productive relationships
Name characteristics of mental health
Low levels of stress and anxiety, optimal self esteem, positive thought patterns, ability to think and process info, high level of confidence, use logic and reasoning to form opinions and make decisions
Name characteristics of emotional health
High level of resilience, recognise and understand emotional actions/reactions, experience appropriate emotions in given scenarios, effectively express and manage actions/reactions
Name characteristics of spiritual health
Acting according to beliefs/values, a sense of belonging/connections to the world, positive meaning/place/purpose, peace & hope, developed personal beliefs/values
What are emotions?
Conscious mental reactions subjectively experienced as strong feelings usually directed toward a specific object.
What are feelings?
Generated thoughts about emotions, experienced consciously, mind experiences feelings.
What is rejection?
An emotion that cannot be controlled meaning to feel dismissed as inadequate, unacceptable or faulty.
Give examples of rejection and failure.
Not getting the position you applied for, your friends don’t want to be friends with you anymore, getting low grades, not winning a game.
Outline the impact of rejection on mental health.
Rejection can impact mental health through self-doubt, low self-esteem, self-isolation, depression, anger, reliance on substances and can also create stress/anxiety.
What is the ABCDE model?
Activating event, beliefs, consequences, dispute, exchange.
What is an activating event?
The event you face that triggers unwanted responses.
What are beliefs in the ABCDE model?
The thoughts and beliefs you hold about the Activating Event.
What are consequences in the ABCDE model?
The internal/external behaviours that result from your Beliefs.
What is dispute in the ABCDE model?
Challenging the beliefs/thoughts you had. Are they rational?
What is exchange in the ABCDE model?
Swapping old beliefs/thoughts for new, balanced, rational ones.
