mental illness - definition
disturbance in thoughts/emotions that decreases a persons capacity to cope with challenges of everyday life
social stigma
severe disappointment of a person possessing characteristics that distinguish them from other members
stigma
attribute, behaviour, or reputation which is socially discrediting in a particular way: causes an individual to be mentally classified by others in an undesirable group and rejected
what is stress?
it isn’t an event that stresses you out, its your reaction to the situation
- if stress gets too high it can harm your mental and physical health

- learn how to say no
- avoid people who stress you out
- take control of your environment
- avoid hot topics
- pare down to your to-do list

- express your feelings instead of bottling them up

anxiety
- fear without an object or a focus; a vague sense of apprehension
phobia
- anxiety focused upon some object or situation and leading to exaggerated fear
- intense, irrational dears of a thing or situation
obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- an uncontrollable pattern of recurring, often unpleasant thoughts
- try to ease these thoughts by performing ritual behaviours (compulsion)
compulsion
- uncontrollable repetition of an irrational act
anxiety disorders
- 1 in 8 people will have at least 1 of these illnesses in their lifetime
panic disorder
- main symptom of most anxiety disorders
- person may feel intense fear, trouble breathing, racing heart, dizzy, numb, or nauseous
agoraphobia
- extreme form of panic disorder or social phobia in which people have a fear of open/public spaces
generalized anxiety disorders (GAD)
- prolonged and recurring feeling of stress and anxiety about everyday things (family, money, friends, school)
PTSD
- anxiety brought on by a specific and terrifying event
- may have vivid nightmares where they relive the event
how to treat anxiety
- change diet, less caffeine
- get more exercise, sleep
- get medical help (medication, therapy)
symptoms of depression
- little or too much sleep
- restless and agitation
- trouble concentrating
- hopelessness
- change in eating habits
- loss of interest in things
- thoughts of suicide
major depressive disorder (mood)
- having a lot of symptoms of depression
seasonal affective disorder (mood)
- brought by changes is weather and usually starts in the winter time when people are exposed to less sunlight
postpartum depression (mood)
- depression that women (and men) experience after giving birth
- linked to hormonal changes
- less freedom and lifestyle changes
