What is DMS - 5?
Its the diagnostic and statistical manual, version 5 and it allows the categorization of mental illness by the symptoms and their degree.
What did Szasz believe?
He felt “metal illness” should be considered problems of living.
What are the anxiety disorders?
Phobias, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
What are Phobias?
- an anxiety disorder
- unreasonable fears
- usually classically conditioned
- social phobias are unreasonable
What are the treatments for Phobias?
Tranquilizers, flooding, systematic desensitization, modeling (group therapy)
What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?
- an anxiety disorder
- low-level anxiety for over 6 months
- no obvious target or cause
- probably a limbic system malfunction
What is Panic Disorder?
- an anxiety disorder
- short-lived attacks of pure terror multiple times a month
- no obvious target or cause
- can occur with or without agoraphobia
What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?
- an anxiety disorder
- uncontrollable and intrusive obsessions and compulsions
- inappropriate, disturbing actions usually provoked obsessions
What is Post-Traumatic Disorder?
- an anxiety disorder
- flashbacks
- emotional difficulties
- cognitive difficulties
- behavior problems including danger and recklessness
What are the mood disorders?
Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia.
What is Major Depressive Disorder?
- a mood disorder
- overwhelming feelings of despair and hopelessness not proportionate to the situation
- twice as common in females
Why is it that females are more likely to be diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder?
- males distract themselves, females dwell
- males resort to alcohol instead
- males don’t report
- females suffer from powerlessness and hoplessness
What is Bipolar Disorder?
- a mood disorder
- composed of three subcategories
- Bipolar 1, Bipolar 2, and Cyclothimic Disorder
What are the differences between the subcategories within Bipolar Disorder?
- Bipolar 1 is extreme depression and mania
- Bipolar 2 is extreme depression and at least one manic episode
- Cyclothimic Disorder is milder depression and mania alternating approximately every 2 years

Females outnumber males 4 - 1
Who is most likely to die from a suicide attempt, males or females?
Males outnumber females 4 - 1
Are most suicides preventable?
Yes, most suicides give clues of their plans before attempting them.
What are the positive symptoms of Schizophrenia?
- hallucinations (auditory)
- delusions (grandiose and persecution)
- speech disturbances (word salad, clang)
- disorganized behavior (silly, odd motor movt.)
- inappropriate affect (cry at comedy shows, laugh when upset)
What are the negative symptoms of Schizophrenia?
- flat affect (no emotions)
- social withdrawals
- don’t groom themselves as often as they should
- catatonia
What are the different types of Schizophrenia?
- paranoid schizo: constant thoughts of grandeur and persecution
- disorganized schizo: silly and bizarre
- catatonic schizo: total immobility
- undifferentiated schizo: shifting symptoms
What is Antisocial Personality?
- marked lack of empathy
- no fear of punishment
- willing to lie, cheat, steal, hurt others
- more common in males
What do psychologist think is the reason for Antisocial Personality?
- frontal lobe damage
- low frontal lobe functioning and frontal lobe immaturity
- traced back to childhood
What is the Autism Spectrum?
- limited language
- inability to engage in reciprocal social interaction
- extremely limited range of interests, usually diagnosed by age 2
- involves “mind blindness”
- fragile x syndrome
What are some ways to identify someone with Autism?
- they stack things
- have weird posturing
- lack eye contact
