MET's (muscle energy technique) Flashcards

1
Q

what do MET’s do?

A

increase joint range of motion: mobilize stiff joints and improve their functional movement.

Improve muscle flexibility: stretching tight muscles and reducing muscle spasms.

Pain reduction: may help alleviate pain and discomfort by releasing tension and improving joint mechanics.

Neuromuscular re-education: helps train the neuromuscular system to work more efficiently, promoting better movement patterns.

Q

Whats the difference between autogenic MET and reciprocal inhibition MET

A

Autogenic Inhibition MET: sub-maximal contraction of the muscle is followed by stretching of the same muscle.
Reciprocal Inhibition MET: Submaximal contraction of a muscle is followed by stretching of the opposite muscle

Q

isotonic contractions (all examples of the bicep brachii muscle)

A

concentric: during flexion or upward phase of the exercise, bicep brachii produces tension and shortens
eccentric: during extension or downward phase of a bicep curl, bicep brachii produces tension and lengthens

Q

isometric contraction (example of the bicep brachii muscle)

A

occurs in the biceps brachii when the muscles is holding the weight still. bicep brachii develops tension and stays the same length. it stops flexion and extension of the elbow.
this is what used in our MET treatment

Q

MET indications

A

Whenever somatic dysfunction is present and/or whenever there is
a need to
* Acute injuries
* Mobilize restricted joint(s)
* Muscle hyperactivity
* Myofascial restrictions, muscle imbalance
* Movement restriction due to muscle tightness
* Normalize abnormal neuromuscular relationships
* Improve local circulation and respiratory function
* Lengthen and/or normalize restricted/hypertonic muscles and
fascia
