metabolic antagonists Flashcards

1
Q

Metabolic antagonists

A

act as antimetabolites - antagonise or block functioning of metabolic pathways by competitively inhibiting the use of metabolites by key bacterial enzymes; structural analongs of metabolites, block normal cellular metabolism

Q

sulfonamides

A

metabolic antagonist – a para aminobenzoic acid analog; PABA used for synthesis of folic acid and made by many pathogens. sulfa drugs are selectively toxic to these pathogens by competing with PABA for an enzyme involved in folic acid synthesis. folic acid is precursor of purines and pyramidines. side effects - nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, photosensitivity
