Metabolic Rate Flashcards
(10 cards)
define metabolic rate
the amount of energy used by an organism in a given period of time
how can metabolic rate be measured?
oxygen consumption, CO2 production can be measured using a respirometer (indirect calorimetry), heat production can be measured using a calorimeter (direct calorimetry)
Why do different organisms have different metabolic rate
Different metabolic needs
Describe the link between metabolic rate an oxygen consumption
Organisms with high metabolic rate more efficient delivery of oxygen to cells
Describe the heart arrangement and circulation type for fish
2 chambers, single circulatory system
Describe the heart arrangement and circulation type for amphibians and reptiles
Three chambers- L/R atrium and 1 ventricle, incomplete double
Describe the heart arrangement and circulation type for mammals + birds
4 chambers, double complete
Comment on the efficiency of the circulatory system in fish
The single circulatory system is the least effective as pressure is lost
Comment on the efficiency of the circulatory system in amphibians and reptiles
The double incomplete circulatory system is more effective as pressure is maintained, but tissue blood is incompletely oxygenated (oxygenated and deoxygenated blood are mixed)
Comment on the efficiency of the circulatory system in birds and mammals
The double complete circulatory system is the most effective as pressure is maintained (blood can reach all parts) and the tissue blood is completely oxygenated
