Metal Addition/fabrication Processes Flashcards
(27 cards)
What does MIG welding stand for?
Metal inert gas
What types of metals is mig welding used to weld?
Thin gauge metals(medium carbon steel) or aluminium
What is MIG welding used to form!
Tubular sections of products such as climbing frames, bike frames or vehicular exhausts
What action is done to complete the mig welding?
Swirling action
What is the inert gases used for in mig and tig welding?
To replace the oxygen at joint areas to prevent oxidisation(rusting)
What metals is TIG welding used to weld?
Stainless steal or non-ferrous metals. For example stainless steel ladders for bots or pools or stainless steel exhausts
What does TIG stand for?
Tungsten inert gas
What is one benefit of TIG and one dissadvantage?
Allows for greater control from the operator (creates stronger welds) but the process requires higher levels of skill
When is oxy-acetylene welding useful?
For quick fixing jobs (magic Mike scene) or when there is no electricity available
Why are the metals prepared by carving a v into them?
To ensure weld runs through entire thickness of metal
What is another name for brazing?
Hard soldering
In brazing, what is applied to prevent oxidisation?
Flux
What approximate temp is the joint heated to using oxy-acetylene?
850 degrees
What is solder typically made from?
An alloy of tin and copper
When is riveting typically used?
Used to join sheet metal
What shape is the rivet shaft?
Dome shaped
How are the parts joined in riveting?
End of the shaft is hammered over to squeeze the two parts together
When is pop riveting ideal?
When the underside of a joint is inaccessible
What is the difference in the rivet in normal and pop riveting?
In pop riveting there is an steel pin
What gas is used in flame cutting?
Oxy-acetylene
What temperature does the flame exceed in flame cutting?
3500 degrees
What is flame cutting used for?
Cutting low carbon alloy steel plate
What is the use of the additional jet of oxygen in flame cutting?
Intensifies the flame and pierces the metal
What is the negative of flame cutting?
Difficult to maintain a parallel line
