Closed/function words

Three golden rules
-always look at the word in its context
- there are no 100%
- when in doubt, apply multiple tests
Nouns
- can be made plural
- can come after ‘the’, ‘a’, ‘an’
-person, place, thing
Verbs
-there must be a lexical verb
-can change tense
-what is happening? What is the subject doing?
Copular verbs
-work with the subject and provide more detail
E.g is, are
Adjectives
-describe a noun
- can come before or after a noun
Adverbs
-time, manner, place, frequency, degree
-when in doubt-> adverb
Interjection
-have emotional meaning
- appear more in speech/narration
E.g oh, oi, um, wow, yuck, shh
Preposition
-most often, occur before NPs
- of, at, with
- the box test
Determiners
-come before a noun, but QUALIFY IT rather than describe it
- can be replaced by ‘the’ -> ‘many chairs’->’the chairs’
Pronouns
Replace a noun
CANNOT BE FOLLOWED BY A NOUN
