Metallic And Ionic Bonding Flashcards
(6 cards)
Define ionic bonding
The strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
How do you increase the strength of an ionic bond
Increasing the ionic charge
Decreasing the ionic radii
How do ions form
Cations is the loss of electrons
Anions is the gain of electrons
What are isoelectric ions
Ions that have the same number of electrons and electronic structure
What is the trend in ionic radii across a period of isoelectric ions
As the number of protons increases, the ionic radius decreases because as the positive charge of the nucleus increases, the electrons are attracted more strongly and are therefore pulled closer to the nucleus
What are the physical properties of ionic compounds
High melting points
Brittleness
Poor electrical conductivity when solid but good when molten
Often soluble in water
