Metals Flashcards
(25 cards)
Metallothion proteins?
1st line of defense against metal poisoning, when saturated -> toxic effect
Specificity EDTA? WHat is it?
chelating agent, low.
Accumulation of Arsenic?
hair, nails, skin, bones
effect of Arsenic?
binds -SH groups –> inactivation of enzymes.
Chelating agent arsenic?
dimercaprol
Effect of Arsine? (AsH3)
hemolysis
Arsenite + Selenite given together –> ?
cancelled toxicity.
CHelating agent for Pb?
EDTA
where does Pb accumulate?
bones (years) organs (weeks/months)
What is affected by Pb?
Blood
Brain
What does Pb do?
mimics other metals (cofactors in enzymes?) –> enzyme activity lowered
Pb in CNS?
interfered w/ release of Glutamate –> learning & memory impaired.
Pb in PNS?
demyelination –> signaltransduction impaired.
Chelating agent for Cadmium?
BAL (Dimercaprol)
Cadmium persistent?
yes
Cadmium accumulation?
kidney
effect of Cadmium?
lowers [Ca2+] (because level of Ca mod. by liver)
–> Ca2+ taken from bones as compensation
=> osteoporose-like symptoms
example of cadmium outbreak?
itai itai disease. (rice grown in Cd water)
toxic Hg compund?
MethylHg
How does Hg get into food chain?
some bacteria prod. MethylHg –> accumulation in food chain
How does Hg cross BBB?
Transporters used.
Examples of Hg outbreaks?
- Minamata disease
- Basra poison grain disaster (fungicide w/ methylHg used)
Thalliumsulfate used as?
rodenticide
effect of thallium?
Tl+ has similar diameter as K+ => distr. via Na/K pump
mainly on CNS
