-Car bodies
-Steel building frames
-Pipelines
What are the properties of High carbon steel?
-Hard
-Brittle
-Resistant
-Hard wearing
What are the uses of High carbon steel?
-Tools
-Blades
-Scissors
What are the uses of Cast Iron?
-Kitchen pans
-Manhole covers
-Machine bases
What is a ferrous metal?
A metal which contains iron ferrite with high tensile strength
What are non ferrous metals?
They are metals which are pure metals without any iron
What are the properties of zinc?
-Brittle
-Malleable
-High corrosion resistance
What are the uses of zinc?
Used to galvanise steel
What are the properties of copper?
-Ductile
-Malleable
-Good electrical conductor
What are the uses of copper?
-Plumbing supplies
-electrical cables
What are the properties of Tin?
- Malleable
- Ductile
- High corrosion resistant
- Good electrical conductor
What are the uses of tin?
- Solder
- Plating surfaces
What are the properties of Aluminium?
- Lightweight
- Ductile
- Resists corrosion
What are the uses of aluminium?
- Bike frames
- Drinks
- Cans
- Takeaway trays
What is welding?
- Welding fuses together metals at a very high temperature
1) High heat melts the bases material
2) Metal filler (welding rod) is melted to fill the joint
3) Once the parts cool down, they are fused together which creates a very strong joint
P.S - Spot welding is a quick version of welding
What are the properties of cast Iron?
- Hard
- Brittle
- Resistant to deformation and rust
