Q

how to find amount of oxygen reacted with Mg

A
  1. measure 2 g of Mg by using balance
  2. burn into cruciblr and cover with lid to avoid spitting
  3. remove lid from time to time to allow oxygen in
  4. measure mass after burning then burn again and measure mass
  5. repeat previous step until you reach constant mass whic means reaction is done
  6. final mass into crucible - inital mass = mass ofoxygen

Q

what is reduced by carbon and why not electrolysis

A

metals less reactive than carbon

metals starting from zinc and down in reactivity series
why?
less expensive than electrolysis. (Cu, Ag, Au) found uncombined in nature

Q

what are the three ores in reactivity series

A
  1. Aluminum ore is Bauxite Al2O3 is extracted by electrolysis

2.zinc ore is zinc blende ZnS extracted by reducing with carbon.

  1. iron ore is hematite Fe2O3 extraced by reducing with carbon
