Meters Flashcards
(24 cards)
Why do we use meters when tracking
meters are used to ensure the input signals do not overload and to maintain headroom
Why do we use meters the mixing
to provide a rough estimate of the loudness of each track
Why do we use meters in mastering
meters are used to check compliance with level and loudness standards
What is metering scale?
What signal level corresponds to what indication on the meters
What is metering ballistics?
How the meter responds to changes in level over time
what does the scale read in a VU meter
-20VU to +3 VU
What is the secondary scale of a VU meter
percentage of 0dB VU
In professional recording equipment what is ) VU in volts RMS
1.288 volts RMS (+4dBu)
How long does it take for the needle to reach 0 VU from the bottom
300m/s
Does the VU meter respond to peaks
no - it has LED overload indictor instead
What are other PPM variations?
British Broadcasting Corporation, Deutsche Industrie Norm, Europe Broadcasting Union
On a BBC PPM scale what PPM mark corresponds to 0dBu?
PPM 4 = 0dBu
Mark 5 = +4dBu
What is the attack time of a BBC PPM meter?
5ms - has a slow fall back time to avoid eye fatigue
On a DIN PPM scale what does 0dB correspond to (in dBu)?
+6dBu - 1.55 volts RMS
On a nordic PPM scale what does the test marking correspond to?
0dBu = 0.775 volts RMS
On a dorrough meter what does 0dB correspond with (dBu)
+4dBu
has a peak decay of 180ms
What does digital peak meter display?
the absolute maximum signal of the raw samples - doesn’t show intersample peaks
calibrated to 0dBFS
What is the difference between digital peak meters and digital true peak meters?
DTPM has the addition of data pre-processing - it is up sampled so it takes inter-sample peaks into account. It uses dBTP instead of dBFS
To assure programme loudness level of your content is normalised to a target level what should you not exceed?
-23 LUFS
What are the EBU specifications?
Momentary Loudness
Short-term loudness
Integrated Loudness
Loudness range meter
Momentary Loudness (M)
uses an RMS window of 400ms
Short-term loudness (S)
uses a window of 3 seconds - more stable than M
Integrated loudness (I)
overall loudness
Loudness range meter (LR)
shows input loudness range
