A

It was the purchase made by the U.S. to get Louisiana Territory in France. They paid 15,000,000 dollars for this. This means that the size of the U.S. has now doubled in size and the U.S. now shares a border with Texas.

What was the Neutral Ground Agreement?

A

The U.S. and Spain did not agree on the same borders, so they called the land in between the Neutral Ground. The Spanish believed it was the Arroyo Hondo while the U.S. believed that it was the Sabine River. Because nobody controlled this land, criminals and fugitives came here to settle so they could stay safe from legal authorities.

What was the Adams- Onis Treaty?

A

It ended the Neutral Ground Agreement, and said that the Sabine River was the new boundary of Texas. The U.S. also got Florida from France. In return, the U.S. promised that they would leave Spain alone.

A

He was the first Filibuster who came to Texas to capture wild horses and sell them for a profit. His friendship with a U.S. Army commander made Spain suspicious (They thought he was an American Spy).

Why did Mexico want independence from Spain?

A

There were many problems with Spain’s rule. Spain was too far away to help citizens in New Spain. The Spanish King forced colonists to pay heavy taxes and he took money from their churches. Colonists were excluded from the best jobs, the class system kept most of New Spain’s citizens in poverty.

What was the Grito de Delores?

A

Father Miguel Hidalgo called for Mexican citizens to fight for independence from Spain. This was called his “Grito de Dolores”, which means “A cry of pain”. This speech inspired many people, eventually leading up to Mexico’s independence.

Jose Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara traveled to the United States in 1811 to get help freeing Texas from Spanish rule. He met Augustus Magee and together they created the Republican Army of the North.

What was the Battle of Medina is it known as?

A

It was the bloodiest battle in Texas History. August 1813, the Republican Army battled Spanish forces south of San Antonio at the Medina River. Commanded by General Arredondo, the Spanish overwhelmed the Republican Army. They were all killed during the battle or executed after it.

A

It said that there would be a Federal Republic (Elect people), Catholicism is the official religion, Mexico is divided into 19 states and 4 territories, and it Created the state of Coahuila y Tejas, merging the two provinces (Texas is NOT a separate state due to the small population)

A

Land agents that helped recruit and bring in settlers to an area. They agreed that they would help the government sell more land in exchange for a precent of the profit.

A

He is called “The Grandfather of Texas” because it was his idea to bring Anglo-American Settlers to Texas. He is also the father of Stephen F. Austin, who is called “The Father of Texas”.

A

He became the first empresario in Texas when he took hos father’s job after he died. He brought Anglo-American settlers to Texas and was the one who carried out his father’s ideas.

It was land between the Colorado and Brazos River. The area had rich soil, access to water, and a warm climate.

He was an empresario who settles 200 Mexican families in South Texas. He and his wife helped founded the city “Victoria”.

A

It was founded by Gil’Y Barbo. He was the leader of the East Texas settlers and was infuriated that they had to go to San Antonio. He led the East Texas settlers back to East Texas without the government’s permission. He built Nacogdoches here with a settlement of 350 settlers near the abandoned East Texas missions.

A

It was the document that was signed to declare the United States an independent nation. Because of Spain’s help, they were given Florida.

A

He was a guy who moved to Galveston claiming to support the rebels in Galveston. BUT… he was more interested in stealing valuable Spanish cargo.

Why did rebels against Spanish rule go to Galveston Texas?

A

Galveston was an ideal base of operations against the Spanish fleet in the Gulf of Mexico, given its REMOTE LOCATION. Many rebels would arrive in Galveston claiming to support Mexican Independence.
