Micro Quiz Flashcards
(29 cards)
Most pathogens are (ph)
Neutrophils
Most pathogens and microbes are (temp)
Mesophiles
When the ph changes
Enzymes are denatured
Human blood ph
7.4
Buffers
Used to retard ph changes
Example is strong acid buffer will weaken the acid
Zwitterions
Amino acids in media that are used as natural buffers
3 oxygen labs
Fluid thioglycollate
Anaerobic jar
Brain heart agar
Thioglycollate
-Used to grow aerobic and anaerobic microbes.
-Chemical sodium thioglycollate reduces oxygen to water.
-chemical resazurin acts as an indicator.
• pink is oxidized
• colorless is reduced
Anaerobic jar
-Creates anaerobic, microaerophilic, and capnophile conditions.
Contains gas pack and palladium
Gas pack in anaerobic jar does:
Produces hydrogen and carbons dioxide CO2
Palladium in anaerobic jar:
Combines hydrogen and oxygen O2
Brain and heart agar:
A molten agar that can be used the same way as thioglycollate.
Aerotolerance
Te ability or inability to live in the presence of oxygen
Anaerobic
Live at the bottom of a test tube
Aerobic
Live at the top of a tube
Obligate (strict) aerobe
Require oxygen so grow at the top
Facultative anaerobes
Grow in presence or absence of oxygen. Grow throughout medium but appear denser near the top.
Aerotolerant anaerobes
Do not require oxygen and are not. Adversely affected by it. Live uniformly throughout the medium.
Microaerophiles
Survive only in environments containing lower than atmospheric levels of oxygen. Are seen in the middle or upper middle region of the medium
Capnophiles
Survive only if carbon dioxide levels are elevated.
Obligate ( strict) anaerobes
Even small amounts of oxygen are lethal. Will only be seen in the lower regions of the medium.
Psychrophiles
Middle optimum maximum
Grow below 20 Celsius
-5 minimum
10 optimal
17 maximum
Psychrotrophs
Grow from 0 to 30
Minimum is 0
Optimum is 22
Maximum 35
Mesophiles
Between 15 and 45
Minimum is 15
Optimum is 35
Maximum is 45
