Q

What is a cell?

A

Minutes compartments that make up all living tissue. Site of metabolism and replication. All cells descend from other cells by modification.

5
Q

What is the role of metabolism in a cell? What is the role of the cell membrane in metabolism?

A

The metabolism is needed in a cell for growth and life

The cell membrane keeps the products of metabolism together

6
Q

What is the role of information in a cell? How is the cell membrane important for information systems?

A

The cell stores information necessary to synthesize the metabolic system
Information is linked to the metabolic system by the membrane

8
Q

Why is cell reproduction important regarding growth? How do metabolism and information play a role in this?

A

When cell grows too large it becomes inefficient; organelles are further from membrane. This is when the cell splits.
And information system that encodes a more efficient metabolism will reproduce at a faster rate. This is natural selection.

Q

What is a plasmid?

A

Small DNA molecule that occurs in bacteria genome but is not essential to it’s normal function.

16
Q

Where does a chromosome attach to genome?

A

Attached to plasma membrane by a protein complex

17
Q

What is the link between metabolism and information? What structure carries this out?

A

Transcription and Translation are encoded in genome and the link between metabolism and information.
The Ribosome is required to carry this process out.

18
Q

What is Binary Fission?

A

Asexual reproduction by separation of body into two new bodies.

19
Q

Luca split to create two groups. What are these groups?

A

Eubacteria and Archaea

20
Q

What are the three domains? And a characteristic of each?

A
  • Bacteria- peptidoglycan cell wall
  • Archaea- grows in extreme environments
  • Eukaryotes- Nuclear envelope, cellulose and chitin cell wall
21

Contains chlorophyll and BOTH photosystems

23
Q

Streptomyces “common thing”

A

Bacteria in antibiotics

24

Bacillus “common thing”

A

Can withstand almost anything

Agent of Anthrax

25
Mycoplasma "common thing"
