Germs or microbes
Bacteria
Two types of bacteria classifications
Pathogenic and non pathogenic
spherical (round-shaped) bacterial cells, which appear singularly or in groups.
Cocci
Pus-forming bacterial cells that form in grape-like bunches or in clusters
Staphylococci
Pus-forming bacterial cells that form in long chains
Streptococci
Bacterial cells that form in cells (cause infections like pneumonia)
Diplococci
Most common form of bacterial cells; form as bar or rod like shaped cells.
Bacilli
Spiraled, coiled, corkscrew-shaped bacterial cells
Spirilla
What are the two stages of bacteria growth cycle?
Active and inactive
What is binary fission?
Bacterial reproduction
Sub-microscopic particle (much smaller than bacteria) that causes familiar diseases like the common cold
Virus
Bloodborne pathogen that causes a highly infectious disease that infects the liver.
HBV
Virus that can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
HIV
Common viral infection that can lead to health problems such as genital warts, plantar warts, cervical changes and cervical cancer.
HPV
Organisms that live on or obtain their nutrients from another organism called a host.
External parasites
Slime that is created when a bacterial colony and water are present
Biofilm
Molds and yeasts that produce contagious diseases such as ringworm
Parasitic fungi
Disease-causing bacteria or viruses that are carried through the blood or body fluids
Bloodborne Pathogens
What are the two defense mechanisms a body fights infections?
Active immunity and passive immunity
Spread of infectious disease when an infected person touches or exchanges body fluids with someone else
Direct transmission
Infectious disease that can spread through the air or contact with a contaminated object
Indirect transmission
Transmitted from one person to another, usually through touch or through the air
Contagious infection
Spread to a new person frequently (Cause no infection unless they actually enter the body)
