Microbiology Flashcards
(27 cards)
Microbiology
The study of life forms only detected under a microscope
Michael organ
They are everywhere in the environment. They are harmless and some can even be beneficial.
Bacteria
Single cell micro organisms that can thrive without living tissue
Non-pathogen
Do not cause disease under normal conditions
Normal flora
Bacteria that lives in and on the body that assist systems in staying in homeostasis
Oral cavities
Gastrointestinal tract - lactobacillus acidophilus
The skin
Aerobic
Bacteria that need air to grow & multiply
Rickellsiae
Re ket see i
Bacteria That Live and grow only inside other living things (vectors)
People get them from insect bites
Anaerobic
Batters that do not need air to grow & multiply
Viruses
Smallest known infectious agents that require living tissue to survive and grow
Attach to cell, takes control, & destroys cell and nearby cells
Challenging for labs to grow or test and difficult to kill due to mutation during replication
Fungi
fungus - mold
Single cell fungi - yeasts
Grows on or in animals and plants most do not normally cause disease and it can be useful cause it’s a source of antibiotics
Protozoa
Single so parasites that can be microscopic or large enough to be seen with a microscope they replicate rapidly inside hose and thrive and damp environments
Ponds
lakes
standing water
Multicellular parasites
Cause infestations and infections
Lice
Scabies
Pinworms
Hookworms
Bedbugs
Immunocompetent
Normal functioning immune system
Immunodeficient
Immunocompromise
Immunosuppressed
Immune systems ability to fight, infectious disease, diseases, and cancer is compromise or completely absent
-Active cancer treatments
-Organ transplant
-Advanced or untreated HIV infectio
At risk for opportunistic infections
Opportunistic infections
Micro organisms that would not cause an infection in an immunocompetent person
How infections are diagnosed?
Provider examines patient specimens obtained and sent to the lab
-Blood
-urine
-wound culture
-throat culture
-sputum
Vector
Animal that carries disease
Formites
Inanimate object that carries disease
Bacteria Common Shapes
-Coccus (round)
-Spirillum (Spiral-shaped)
-Vibrio (Shaped like a comma)
-Bacillus (Rod-shaped)
Microbiology
Study of small life forms only detected under microscope
Microorganisms
Everywhere in the environment, usually cause, no problem and can be beneficial
Some cause disease
