Microbiology Flashcards
(12 cards)
Bacteria
Larger then viruses, simple singled-celled: no nucleus, divided into aerobes and anaerobes, reproduce asexually
Aerobes
Need oxygen
Anaerobes
Don’t need oxygen
Asexually
Clone, double numbs every 20 mins
In order to grow bacteria you need:
Food, water, a suitable temperature and suitable pH
Soil bacteria
Break down (decompose) dead plant material to release nutrients into the soil
Uses of bacteria
Decay waste and make cheese, yoghurt, insulin and silage
Harmful bacteria
Cause disease, food spoilage and tooth decay
Fungi
Fungal cell similar to plant cell but does not possess chlorophyll (it is not green and cannot make food)
Microbiology
The study of small living things (bacteria, virus and fungus)
Biotechnology
The use of living things to make useful substances.
Medical Buotechnology
Bacteria and fungi used to make antibiotics
