A

1 Wind - pneumonia, often associated with ventilators.
2 Water - UTI, seen with catherterization.
3 Wound - broken skin is an invitation for infectious disease.
4 Wires - e.g. IV lines.

All four are common ways of spreading hospital aquired gram-neg infections.

2
Q

Two reasons for the clinical significance of Psudomonas?

A

1 Opportunistic - colonizes and infects sick & immunocompromized
2 Resistant to almost every antibiotic out there

3
Q

Pseudomonas pathomechanism?

A

Exotoxin A - which has the same mechanism of action as diptheria toxin(stops protein synthesis)

4
Q

Important Pseudomonas infections?

A

BE PSEUDO =

Burns
Endocarditis

Pneumonia
Sepsis
External malignant otitis media
UTI
Diabetic Osteomyelitis
5
Q

A

Burkholderia cepacia - an environmental bacteria that can grow in water, soil, plants and animals.

6
Q

Three good ways of preventing hospital aquired infections are?

A
