Microscopes Flashcards
1
Q
Magnification
A
How many times bigger the image appears compared to the original.
2
Q
Resolution
A
The smallest distance between two distinguishable points.
3
Q
Light Microscope
A
Uses visible light, has a low resolution, can observe living specimens.
4
Q
Laser scanning confocal microscope
A
- Specimen is stained with fluorescent dye.
- Laser beams cause dye to give off colour.
- Recorded by detector.
- Very clear image.
- Shows objects at different depths in thick specimens.
5
Q
Electron Microscopes
A
- Has a very high resolution and magnification.
- Uses electrons to bounce off the specimen or send through it.
6
Q
What is a light microscopes magnification and resolution?
A
Magnification = x1500-2000 Resolution = 200nm
7
Q
What is a transmission electron microscope’s magnification and resolution?
A
Magnification = x500,000-2,000,000 Resolution = 0.2-0.5nm
8
Q
What is a scanning electron microscope’s magnification and resolution?
A
Magnification = x100,000-500,000 Resolution = 3-10nm
