Microscopy Flashcards
(7 cards)
what is the purpose of a microscope?
they let us see things that we cant see with the naked eye. the microscopy techniques we can use have developed over the years as technology and knowledge have improved.
what do light microscopes do?
light microscopes use light and lenses to form an image of a specimen and magnify it. they let us see individual cells and large sub cellular structures, like nuclei.
what do electron microscopes do?
electron microscopes use electrons instead of light to form an image. they have a much higher magnification than light microscopes.
which microscope has a higher resolution?
an electron microscope has a higher resolution.
what does resolution mean?
resolution is the ability to distinguish between two points, so a higher resolution gives a sharper image.
what does an electron microscope allow us to do?
an electron microscope lets us see much smaller things in more detail, like the internal structure of mitochondria and chloroplasts. they let us see tinier things like ribosomes and plasmids.
what is the equation for working out magnification?
magnification = image size/ real size
